- Steam locomotive H 1/2 No. 1 “Gnom” Ostermundigen quarry 1871
Working locomotive with dual drive
The steam locomotive “Gnom” was built by the mountain-railway pioneer Niklaus Riggenbach for the Ostermundigen quarry. In addition to adhesive drive, it also had rack-and-pinion drive. In 1907 it was moved to Rondez, to the Von Roll steel works, as a shunting engine. After it was taken out of service in 1942, Von Roll general manager Dr. Ernst Dübi arranged for the locomotive to be preserved for posterity. In the Swiss Museum of Transport it was restored to working order from 1999 to 2002, before the eyes of the public. The traces of its history remained visible in the process.
